A Journey to Milan: Lessons from the Past for Today’s Economy

This week, I had the pleasure of visiting Milan, Italy—a city renowned for its rich history, stunning architecture, and vibrant culture. Among the many landmarks that caught my attention, one stood out: the imposing Sforza Castle. This historical fortress, with its robust walls and majestic towers, has been a silent witness to centuries of European history. As I wandered through its ancient corridors, our tour guide told us a story that resonated deeply with me, not just as a historical anecdote, but as a poignant metaphor for our present-day economic situation.

In one of the castle’s towers, I learned about a dramatic episode from the past. During the French occupation in the early 16th century, the French military stored large quantities of gunpowder in one of the towers, believing it was the safest place to protect this valuable resource. However, their plan backfired spectacularly. The gunpowder ignited, resulting in a massive explosion that not only destroyed the tower but also caused significant damage to the surrounding areas. The very measures they took to protect their assets led to their catastrophic loss.

This historical event struck a chord with me, especially as I considered the parallels with our current economic policies. Much like the French military’s misguided efforts to safeguard their gunpowder, today’s governments are engaging in extensive stimulus spending, believing it to be the best way to protect and bolster the economy. However, these well-intentioned actions may be leading us toward an economic explosion of our own.

In response to various economic challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, governments worldwide have injected unprecedented amounts of money into their economies, through record deficits. In the United States, stimulus packages have reached trillions of dollars. The Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act (CARES) appropriated $2.3 trillion! While this spending aimed to stimulate growth and protect jobs, it has also led to a massive increase in national debt and a significant expansion of the money supply.

The problem with such expansive fiscal policies is that they come with hidden dangers—much like the gunpowder stored in Sforza Castle’s tower. The immediate effects of stimulus spending can be deceptively positive, with boosts in consumer spending and temporary economic relief. However, the long-term consequences can be perilous. As more money chases a finite supply of goods and services, inflation becomes an inevitable outcome. This inflationary pressure erodes the purchasing power of the dollar, undermining the very economic stability that the stimulus aimed to protect. And even though it seems as if inflation is cooling, there is a real risk it could come to rest appreciably higher than many policy makers and investors believe.

Moreover, the ballooning national debt presents another risk. As debt levels soar, so does the cost of servicing that debt. Higher interest payments on the national debt can crowd out other essential government spending (or not) and lead to fiscal crises (or runaway inflation, baring recession). If investors begin to doubt the government’s ability to manage its debt, it could result in a loss of confidence and a sharp devaluation of the dollar.

The story of the French and their gunpowder serves as a cautionary tale for our times. Just as their attempt to protect their resources led to their destruction, our current economic policies might be setting us up for a financial disaster. The government’s well-meaning efforts to safeguard the economy through stimulus spending are, in reality, bringing us to a tipping point where the dollar could “blow up,” triggering a severe economic crisis.

While stimulus spending can provide short-term relief, it is crucial to consider the long-term implications. We must be wary of the potential for runaway inflation and unsustainable debt levels. Learning from the past, we should seek balanced economic policies that promote sustainable growth without jeopardizing our financial future. Only then can we avoid the fate of the French at Sforza Castle and ensure that our economy remains robust and resilient for generations to come.
