Discovering Copenhagen: A Journey Through History, Culture, and Opportunity

My recent visit this summer to Copenhagen, Denmark, was nothing short of extraordinary. Known for its cleanliness, efficient public services, and rich history, Copenhagen is a city that seamlessly blends the old with the new. As I embarked on a walking tour with my guide, I was captivated by the city’s charm and its fascinating stories.

Our walking tour began in the heart of Copenhagen. My guide, a local entrepreneur with a deep passion for the city’s heritage, led us through cobblestone streets and along picturesque canals. We started at the Amalienborg Palace, the winter residence of the Danish royal family. The palace’s grandeur and the changing of the guard ceremony were truly a sight to behold.

Next, we strolled to the Nyhavn district, famous for its vibrant, colorful buildings and bustling waterfront. Originally a busy commercial port where ships from all over the world would dock, Nyhavn is now a lively area filled with restaurants, bars, and cafes. It was truly a charming area of the city.

We then visited the original house of Carlsberg Beer. Founded in 1847 by J.C. Jacobsen, the brewery was named after Jacobsen’s son, Carl, and the word “berg,” which means hill in Danish. The name Carlsberg literally translates to “Carl’s Hill,” referring to the hill where the brewery was established. The brewery was established on this hill, because it was the only place in the city that J.C. Jacobsen could find clean water. This historic brewery has played a significant role in Danish culture and the economy.

Finally, we walked through Gammeltorv, one of the oldest squares in Copenhagen, where we saw the high-end Hotel d’Angleterre. During World War II, this luxurious hotel was occupied by Nazi officers. The stories of this period and the resilience of the Danish people were both sobering and inspiring.

Our guide also shared the remarkable tale of how the ocean froze over during a particularly harsh winter in World War II, allowing many Jewish people to escape from Denmark to Sweden. This part of the tour was a poignant reminder of the city’s enduring spirit and the bravery of those who fought against oppression.

A Fascinating Social System

During our walk, my guide shared something incredibly intriguing about Denmark’s social system. Denmark is known for its high taxes, but these taxes fund an extensive range of social welfare benefits that significantly enhance the quality of life for its citizens. Free healthcare, generous parental leave, and robust unemployment benefits are just a few examples.

What astonished me the most was learning about Denmark’s educational opportunities for international students. Students from abroad can study in Denmark for free, with no obligations upon graduation. Many programs, especially at the higher education level, are taught in English, making it accessible for students from English-speaking countries, including the United States. This generous system underscores Denmark’s commitment to education and international collaboration. I also learned that similar opportunities are available in Norway as well.

This unexpected discovery about Denmark’s educational system reminded me of the process of finding good value stocks. Just as I had to go off the beaten path, travel to Denmark, find the right guide, and ask many questions to uncover this opportunity, the same thorough approach is required in investing.

The Importance of Research and Screening

Identifying high-quality value stocks requires diligent research, extensive reading, and careful screening. Investors must look beyond the surface, delve into financial statements, analyze market trends, and evaluate management performance. Security selection and diversification are critical components of a robust investment strategy. Diversification helps mitigate risk, while careful selection ensures that the investments align with one’s financial goals and risk tolerance.
