Overcoming Bearishness: What London’s History Teaches About Long-Term Investing

Share Insight:

This past July, I had the opportunity to visit London, one of the most historically rich and architecturally stunning cities in the world. As we toured the streets in an iconic black cab, I was struck by the beauty, charm, and depth of history around every corner. From ancient landmarks to royal traditions, London’s resilience over the centuries became clear—and with it, an important lesson for investors about avoiding the trap of being too bearish.

Discovering London’s Timeless Charm

Our tour began at Buckingham Palace, where we had the privilege of witnessing the Changing of the Guard. This ceremonial event, which has been taking place since the 17th century, marks the official handover of responsibility for guarding the palace from one regiment to another. The guards, in their iconic red tunics and bearskin hats, move with precise timing and coordination—a tradition deeply rooted in British history. The ceremony is not only a spectacle but a reminder of the enduring stability and discipline of British institutions.

We also witnessed the Changing of the Horse Guard at Horse Guards Parade, where the Household Cavalry, known for their stunning black horses and ceremonial uniforms, perform a ritual that has remained unchanged for centuries. This continuity through time, even in the face of modernity, showcases the strength of tradition and resilience—something that parallels the long-term thinking required in investing.

As we continued through the streets, we marveled at the views of the London Eye, standing tall on the banks of the Thames. Though a modern addition to the city, the London Eye has quickly become one of the most recognizable landmarks in London, symbolizing the city’s constant evolution while maintaining its historical charm. Nearby, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament stood as timeless symbols of democracy, a reminder that strong institutions can endure and thrive even in times of uncertainty.

The Fires That Shaped London

One of the highlights of the tour was learning about the Great Fire of London in 1666. As our cab passed through the ancient streets near Pudding Lane, where the fire began, our guide vividly described how the fire consumed most of the city. Nearly 90% of the buildings in the city’s core were reduced to ashes, leaving many to question if London could ever rise from such devastation.

And yet, from those ashes, London did rise, stronger than before. The rebuilding process led to innovations in architecture and urban planning, including Christopher Wren’s redesign of St. Paul’s Cathedral, which still dominates the London skyline today. This event in London’s history serves as a powerful reminder that after even the most catastrophic setbacks, recovery—and in many cases, improvement—is possible.

Investing: Avoiding the Trap of Being Too Bearish

The Great Fire of London offers a parallel to investing. In times of crisis, it is easy to become overly bearish, expecting the worst and fearing that recovery is impossible. But just as London rebuilt itself, markets often recover from downturns faster than expected. Investors who remain too bearish, selling out of fear, often miss out on the gains that follow recovery.

However, it’s not only at the bottom of market cycles where investors can be too bearish. Even at market highs, the tendency to focus on everything that could go wrong can lead to poor decisions. Whether at the peak of a bull market or in the depths of a bear market, letting fear of potential setbacks dominate thinking can prevent investors from staying on course and achieving long-term success.

History shows us that markets, like cities, are resilient. Though downturns and corrections are inevitable, so too are recoveries. Rather than trying to time the market by becoming too bearish when prices are high or too pessimistic during market troughs, a far better approach is to stay focused on the long-term goals and remain diversified.

Focus on Long-Term Resilience and Diversification

Much like St. Paul’s Cathedral, which rose from the ashes of the Great Fire, markets have a tendency to bounce back after crises. London’s recovery didn’t happen overnight, and neither do market recoveries. But by focusing on the long-term and avoiding the temptation to give in to short-term pessimism, investors can benefit from the market’s inherent resilience.

At the same time, it’s important not to get caught up in euphoria during market highs or overly cautious when things look uncertain. The goal should always be to stay balanced. And the best way to protect oneself is through diversification—across asset classes, geographies, and sectors. Just as London diversified its economy after the Great Fire, ensuring long-term stability, investors too should embrace a diversified approach.

This means holding a wide range of investments to manage risk while positioning for future opportunities. Whether markets are soaring or crashing, diversification allows investors to weather different environments without having to take extreme positions, either overly bullish or overly bearish.

Lessons from London’s Resilience

As we drove past the Tower of London, a fortress that has stood through countless wars, political upheavals, and changes of power, it was another reminder that strength and durability often overcome temporary challenges. For investors, this means that even in times of uncertainty, it is crucial to avoid being too bearish. Instead, focus on diversification as a strategy to manage risk and capitalize on future opportunities. The ability to stay the course, think long-term, and remain disciplined in one’s investment approach is often the difference between success and failure.

Conclusion

London’s history—from the Great Fire to its ongoing evolution as a modern city—teaches us an important lesson: resilience pays off. In investing, as in life, it is easy to become discouraged during difficult times. But by staying focused on the long-term, avoiding overly bearish outlooks at both market tops and bottoms, and trusting in the ability to recover, investors can position themselves for future success.
